On Tuesday November 1 NAMI hosted a Mental Health Youth Symposium and Awards Hero Luncheon, and with over 200 present in attendance, the day was truly one of education, discussion, and collaboration that united agencies and community members across Sonoma County. Many issues were addressed during the event, particularly those that involve behavioral and emotional health as it pertains to youth.
The morning began with an opening speech courtesy of Molin Malicay of Sonoma County Indian Health Project and NAMI Board President, followed by the County Superintendent of Schools, Steve Herrington, and Director of Sonoma County Mental Health, Mike Kennedy. Subsequently, three separate Workshop Panels focused on children and youth at risk, and the organizations that work to combat challenges of emotional and behavioral health. The World Café discussion groups exceeded fifteen diverse topics, procuring an environment of dialogue and interactive learning. Over 20 agencies attended to table at the Symposium, allowing guests and agency representatives the opportunity to forge valuable connections to be utilized in the near future. The NAMI Hero Awards honored seven outstanding community members, and two distinguished programs, that work tirelessly to serve the youth in Sonoma County. As a tribute, the Native Drum Group performed an honorary song for the Hero Award Winners that was truly enjoyed by all.
