NAMI Sonoma County held a Mental Health Symposium on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts as one of the many events during Santa Rosa's Race Equality Week. The symposium was composed of eight multi-cultural workshops aimed at exposing the gaps in care and service to our nation's minorities with mental illness.
Experts and clients presented in the following eight categories: African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Criminal Justice, Latino/Hispanic, LGBTQQI, Native Indian, Veterans and Youth/Education.
The symposium culminated with summarizing the most serious gaps in care and attention for these multi-cultural and minority groups. In conjunction with the symposium, there was a Champions Awards and Recognition ceremony, and "A Taste of the World" Buffet Luncheon.
Award categories included: Client Advocate, Criminal Justice, Early Intervention, Family Advocate, Media, Multicultural Outreach, Recovery Through the Arts, Treatment Program, Treatment Provider and Youth Voice.
Individuals were nominated by peers, community groups, organizations, and individuals. A selection committee composed of community members selected the award winners. There were nearly 500 people in attendance including mental health professionals, college students from Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior College, as well as students from Windsor High School. The "Taste of the World" Buffet Luncheon featured foods from multi-ethnic groups and was provided free to attendees.
