Tools for Transition

Tools for Transition

You can help local community members who are living with a mental illness, who face the challenge of moving into independent living situations from a Board, Care or other residential facility. Since 2001, NAMI Sonoma County has been putting together "Tools for Transition" boxes which contain essential household items such as dishes, cooking utensils, silverware, pots and pans. We also include a sheet set, blanket, pillow, and towels. Due to our budget, most of these items are used, but with your help, we'd like to increase the number of new items and the number of boxes we produce.

We are also looking for good quality used furniture in very good condition, to help clients furnish their own space. We need people to assist in picking up these items when donated and with assembling them into boxes for use throughout the year. Please contact Marlene Mahan or Kristine Siebert if you have anything to donate or would like to volunteer.

Currently we would especially welcome the decently used/new items below:

  • pots, small fry pans, small and large knives, good hand can openers, silverware sets.
  • new salt and pepper sets (Safeway sells them for less than $2)
  • new, inexpensive bed pillows
  • blankets, double or twin sheet sets
  • toiletries like toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, razors, soap, small shampoos, lotions
  • small appliances such as hair dryers, coffee makers, alarm clocks, etc.

If you prefer to give a monetary donation, you could send us a check made out to NAMI Sonoma County that indicates "Tools for Transition" in the memo, but it is fun to try to find great bargains!

Due to the number of items in our boxes, we strive for lightweight items, such as plastic glasses and plates. You can bring any of the above to our office at 1300 N Dutton Ave, Ste. A, Santa Rosa. Or better yet, bring them to one of our monthly education and advocacy meetings and get to know us.
